I’m sure there’s plenty of people out there that think Twitter is the devils tool, just another social media distraction out there. Well my friends, I’m here to put that notion to rest and tell you why Twitter is one of the best social media sites out there (yes, better than Facebook – I said it). First off, Twitter is a host to everything and I mean EVERYTHING you could possibly want to read about. For instance, I just looked up the word “polio” and got 4 people results (ex. UNICEF) as well as an endless amounts of tweets, just in the time that it took me to write this sentence, 20 new tweets about “polio” appeared. Now to search something a little less morbid, “NASA”. Now behold, another 5 people results, endless tweets and 35 new tweets in the time it took me to type this sentence. That should give you a good idea as to the range of topics on Twitter. Still not convinced? Oh I got more . . . Another great feature about Twitter is its strange ability to predict future news. Just saying, I turn on my phone and can see about 50 tweets of various news events even before I hear it on TV. Even better, they are all limited to 140 characters so I don’t need to read a 3 page article to find out who the murderer was. Not to mention the fact that you can choose who to follow to get the news you actually care about, Twitter is like your own personal Tribune. Another great feature about Twitter? Networking. Networking. Networking. If you’re a college student, get on Twitter. It is an extremely useful tool to get in contact with people you NEVER thought you could possibly find. As someone on my Twitter once said “Twitter makes you fall in love with people you don’t know”. Companies are using Twitter more and more as part of their advertising and public relations. You can learn so much about a company by reading their Tweets in so little time and you’ll blow them away in any interview by knowing so much about what they do. Along with everything else Twitter has to offer, its a great place to look for deals. I used subscribe to Groupon Chicago for daily deals but the majority of the emails they would send me were for deals I was never interested and thus never used. Instead, I started following Groupon on Twitter. Not only is my email clean of all the emails they were sending me, Twitter tells me the deal in 140 characters allowing me to browse through the pages in just a couple minutes. So there you have it, some of the reasons why Twitter is the a social media tool worth having. Give @twitter a chance.
